This is not a standard pay-now-or-later problem because you have two points that you may have to clear, but I think it's still reasonable to think of it that way.

As I said, I don't know what I would have played OTB since these decisions are notoriously difficult. However, your variants don't shock me because board strength is incredibly important in these sorts of decisions. I wouldn't say that it's the dead checker per se, but the possibility or the actuality of the made 4pt that causes the huge swing. For example, it significantly changes how bad it is to get hit. The size of the swing may seem huge but after getting over the initial shock of seeing this position, I'm no longer that surprised by such things.

That's only because it's always straightforward to concoct a post-hoc just-so story to justify almost any play (whether the play or the justification is correct or not), and many people confuse the straightforwardness of bot apologetics with the straightforwardness of the position in the first place.
