I totally agree. Has anyone ever gone on record as saying, "Checker play is important, but could never compensate for superior cube play"? I don't recall ever being told this.

Possibly there is some confusion with a similar but slightly different question, which is, should you spend more effort trying to improve your cube play or your checker play? This has been discussed before and I think the answer is "it depends." What you're really looking for here is low-hanging fruit, i.e., how can I make the most improvement for a given amount of study effort? Checker play counts for more equity but perhaps your cube play could be improved significantly with relatively little effort. This will be especially true if you know where your cube weaknesses are but are somewhat hazy on where your checker-play weaknesses are. It all depends on your personal strengths and weaknesses.
