Well, this is very interesting, as is the Magriel quote that gudgen found.

I see now that there is a difference between "Checker play is important, but could never compensate for superior cube play" and "Checker play is important, but could never compensate for inferior cube play". The latter says that if you handle the cube very poorly, then it can't be cancelled out with superior checker play. The former struck me as saying that superior cube play is more important than superior checker play, which is a similar but subtly different claim.

It does also make a difference whether we're talking about backgammon today or backgammon in the pre-bot dark ages. Nowadays, I think both of the following are true:

Checker play is important, but can never compensate for sufficiently inferior cube play.

Cube play is important, but can never compensate for sufficiently inferior checker play.
