Rolling Rules

Tom: how can you possibly rule that one motion is ok while another is not?
Easy. You might imagine that the rule was this:
A legal roll consists of shaking the dice vigorously in a dice cup, holding the cup at a distance above the playing board, turning the cup upside down, and then with some force vertically dropping (whatever that means) the dice directly down to the board.
And the complaint was this:
A player shook the dice, and then, with the cup opening faced away from him, tossed the dice out of the cup so that they bounced and rolled freely across the board.
