Usually, making 5pt on either side of the board is better than making 4pt. However, when your 5pt is already made, making the 4pt is super strong. Here is another example from a recent match of mine (against a well known top level player :) ) where making the 4pt is better than making the defensive 5pt:





White is Player 2

score: 4
pip: 152
11 point match
pip: 163
score: 9

Blue is Player 1

eXtreme Gammon Version: 2.10

Granted, this position is quite a bit different from the OP, but it probably goes to show how strong the 6-5-4 formation in any case is. (Notice the match score!) It would be interesting to learn if anybody did any kind of systematic study of such decisions. They are still often surprising to me.
