They don't have to do it in their head, they simply can type the ammount I am handing them into the electronic cash register. Then they can realize that I've made their life easier as it surely is easier to pay out a 10 a 5 and a quarter than it is to pay out a 10 three 1's and 19 cents. (And yes, we still waste hundreds of millions of dollars a year in this country coining pennies).
