OT: Cookie Deal at KFC

Raffetto's Certified Market, when I was growing up, had a very old cash register that must have broken down, because I can remember the ladies adding up the bill with pencil and paper. Or perhaps it was because they had misrung it the first time?

At any rate, when I was first dispatched by my mother to pick up groceries I had some frustrating encounters, because I would get to the checkout and the total didn't match. This was how I learned that there was a 4% sales tax, and about rounding. (Separate lessons!) Then there was the day my bananas didn't add up, I I discovered that, just to plague me, they were selling bananas for six cents apiece, or three for fifteen. After that, the first thing I would do was to grab Phil Lamantia, one of the managers and owners, and drag him to the fruit counter. "Anything I should know?" I would ask, like a detective sizing him up for a murder charge. He would tell me all of the specials. Then I would go back to the front door and work my way through, buying everything in order, and keeping a running total. I would take into account the specials, and figure the tax. More than half the time the Rosemary, Phil's sister, would ring it up and their total wouldn't match. "You're wrong! It's $22.61" I'd tell her, and the pen and pad of paper would come out. Sometimes she would have to add it two or three times.

I was actually much more polite about it than I have made it sound. I must have been. They were in their forties; I was six. They thought I was cute.

By the way, my personal best was at the original McDonald's. We were doing Arsenic and Old Lace, and I was delegated to order dinner for the cast during dress rehearsals. I made the clerk ring it up four times before she got it right.
