Heh, that reminds me of the first time I went to the US. In Poland it's the usual thing to pay with a bill plus some small change, like you did. In fact clerks often ask if you have some change, especially in small family-run shops, because they're often short of it. When I tried to that in the US people looked at me like I was from outer space :).
