OT: Cookie Deal at KFC

I was in Bacolod, a city in the Philippines, this past February, visiting the local market. I saw some little red bananas which i wanted to sample, and offered the gentleman 20 pesos, (about half a dollar) the smallest coin in my pocket, to try one. He refused to accept it. Not being able to speak either Illongo, nor Tagalog, the principal languages in the region, several hand gestures, head nods, head shakes and shoulder shrugs ensued, until the gentleman accepted the coin, and I left with nearly a dozen of those cute red bananas.

When I got back to the home of my hosts, I was happy to present the bananas to them. I offered one to the youngest member of the family, a 2 year old girl. She took the banana and tucked it under her arm! A look of curiousity came over my face, and her mother explained that the child was saving the banana for tomorrow. I felt such a sadness in my heart as I realized that this child knew hunger, and was no stranger to it. I offered a second banana, which went under the arm with the first one. The third banana was opened and shared with an older sister. It was a poignant example of the of the power of a single coin, which affluent people often take for granted.
