I agree with everything Phil said.

I would add that the first thing you need to do is to develop a good sense for when the position is a drop. At least when you're trailing in the match, I would recommend developing the following habit: When you're tempted to double, ask yourself if the opponent can take. If the answer is, "Definitely not," then consider whether your opponent is threatening to get a takable position. If not then play on. If so, then consider how strong your threats are. If you're threatening to hit more blots or otherwise strengthen your position significantly, then you may have a play-on even if your opponent is threatening to get a takable position.

Getting into the habit of thinking about the doubling decision in this way is half the battle. The other half is dialing your doubling tendencies up or down according to which direction you tend to err. If you tend to cash when too good, then play on more; if you tend to play on when you should double, then double more. Keeping a folder of your TG doubling errors and reviewing it periodically may help.

I think that this plan is more likely to help your game than any "formulas for the too-good point" (which don't really exist anyway, as Phil said).
