I would have played 23/15 OTB as well because it's too easy to outsmart yourself trying to figure this sort of thing out. However, my argument for 23/15 is not that it duplicates 3's. IMO the duplication of 3's is illusory because White is in no hurry to anchor. The argument for 23/15 is that the checker on the 24pt is better placed than the checker on the 23pt, which is slightly more vulnerable to attack and less flexibly placed (no 3 to play).

As for why the computer insists on 24/16, I suspect that Mr Majestyk's explanation is on the right track. I think that the duplication of 4's is real, unlike the visual duplication of 3's.
