My approach to settlements

1. If you are not confident you know what a fair settlement is, or that you are getting a fair settlement, simply don't settle.
2. I do like to settle larger cubes because I don't want to lose a lot on one roll of the dice, and I also don't want to see my opponents lose a lot on one roll of the dice. So if I am not sure of the proper settlement I am always willing to state that I will accept whatever settlement XG says is proper. If there is not a computer immediately available, we use the numbers in our iPhone.
3. Because I play so much in chouettes and for money, long ago I realized the importance of knowing how to calculate fair settlements over the board, so long before I had a laptop and long before there was XG mobile, I studied settlements and to make sure I had them right, I collaborated with Danny Kleinman and Jake Jacobs and wrote an article on the subject, which I did publish on some web site years ago. Anyone who would like a copy of that article on how to do proper settlements for typical positions over the board, shoot me an email and I'll send it to you. pjsimborg@gmail.com
4. In the position shown, I know that if a hit probably wins, and if a miss probably gets you gammoned, the settlement is about what the cube is at...or about 8. You don't win all the time, but you win more than you get gammoned when you miss and you might get another shot, so I would have guessed at about 5 over the board.
