I posted the rollout along with some discussion on rec.games.backgammon. However, I would welcome more comments since I'm not sure I captured all the relevant features of this decision.

One thing I didn't mention on r.g.b. was the significance of a fourth checker on the 8pt. On the basis of that alone you might choose 8/3 6/3 in the second position and 14/6 in the first position. However, if you modify both positions by toggling a spare between the midpoint and the 8pt, it makes some difference but not enough to swing the play (although it's close in one case).
