Backgammon sponsorship

How do the sponsors get value for their investment from backgammon? Backgammon isn't very exciting to watch for non players. However sailing is not very interesting to watch either and they have vast sponsorship at the pro level. They have an image of luxury that sponsors love.
Perhaps if there were backgammon teams sponsored by brands playing a series of matches over several weeks and surrounded with prestigious locations and marketing. You would need great video production values and commentary. You would need a strong person to drive it through and make it happen. And of course, don't forget the commitment from the players.
Another option is a world pro backgammon league with a points system that could be reported in the press. You could take tennis as a model. Anyone up for that?
