My tendency is to make the 5pt in positions like this. I sometimes get dinged for it, and have not tried to work out what the key elements are that make it right or wrong. Here, the 30 pip lead would seem to argue for the safe play. But I don't think I could talk myself into that play OTB. I still have to get my checkers on the 18 around, and I'm running out of time to do it. The 5pt is a permanent asset. This game may have a lot further to go that it looks like. I'll stick with the 5pt.
