There is nothing wrong with the 12 second delay or the rules (except that when you don't play legal moves you run into all kinds of other problems that I won't get into again...that debate has pretty much been solved except by a few TD's who refuse to change).

If the 12 seconds were increased to 20 seconds, for example, the game would drag on and be very boring, because every player would, and rightly should use most of that time on every single move to make sure he hasn't missed something. That would make for a boring game for players and spectators.

So what if you have a difficult play and need to take over 12 seconds...there is plenty of time on the clock to take a reasonable amount of time during even the toughest matches. Yes, more time would give everyone more time to be sure to play their best, but we don't want matches to take that long...it just makes the game less interesting and fun and makes tournaments drag on or, it makes us do just the opposite of what the goal is: in order to get the matches in, if players have so much time, we would have to have shorter matches! So instead of increasing the skill factor, we would be reducing it.

The answer is that every player needs to learn the rules and play by them, and if you play someone that isn't moving the checkers or handling the clock properly, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

If I were playing Magriel, the first time he moved the checkers with two hands I would stop and politely ask him not to and tell him that it bothers me and it is against the rules. The first time he moves sloppily and hits the clock and then has his hand over the board while it is my turn, again, I will ask him nicely to stop and remind him about the rules.

The second time, I will remind him again. And the third time I will stop the match and call for the director and explain what my problem is.

This is not at all a lack of respect for Mr. Magriel or anyone else...in fact, because I respect Paul Magriel so much for what he has and does bring to the game, I don't want to see posts like this and I don't want him to have a bad reputation in any way for not following the rules. So I believe my actions are good for him and the game.

But regardless of what I think, or what anyone thinks, we all have a responsibility to follow the rules and to see that our opponent's do as well.
