My post didn't give my preference or my view on the issue of online vs real play. I only posted a technical reason why GG may not be the best standard without some modifications. Mine was more a technical point.
If you are curious where my feelings lie. If I go to a live event I don't/won't mind if my match is recorded by the opponent or spectators. I won't mind having my matches broadcast directly/indirectly. If I spend good money to travel to an event and was offered the option to play on a computer or on a real board I would outright refuse playing from the computer. It has nothing to do with randomness etc. I just prefer tactile contact. If I want to play from a computer I could opt for playing online events instead. I find playing from the computer less fun.
On a side note: I prefer clocks. I co-run the Calgary "Social" Backgammon Club and we try to get people to honour the spirit of legal-moves. I have no issues with a baffle box, although I still prefer shaking the dice in a cup and release into the box. I'm not against my opponent using a Meyer Dice Tube or some other acceptable method. I just prefer shaking and releasing my own dice from a cup.
