Paul Magriel in Vegas: Sloppy Technique, Illegal Moves

Thanks, David, for filling us in with some more of the story.
As I said in my original post, Paul Magriel is one of my backgammon heroes. His contributions to the game have been immense. I took special care, therefore, to be as objective as I could in describing what I saw happening in the video. I encourage anyone who has 35 minutes to spare to watch all of part 3 at YouTube. I also included links so readers could view specific incidents for themselves, and form their own judgements.
I even omitted incidents, such as those where Magriel snatched up the checkers you hit, putting them on the bar before you had time to put them there yourself. I can’t say for certain (because the audio track was muffled), but that seemed to be one of the things that you did politely ask Paul to stop doing. Unfortunately, he would later forget, and do it again.
One thing I did not pay enough attention to was the clock. When I finally noticed it bearing the number 14, I thought that meant Magriel still had 14 minutes! I began to suspect that there was time pressure, but only very late in match. I had no idea Magriel was down to under 30 seconds. Of course, there is no rule that says when you are short on time you can bend the rules. So although Magriel’s mismanagement of his clock does not excuse his poor—and sometimes illegal—technique, it may at least explain the pressure he was under. Hopefully, that’s all there is to it.
Thanks, again, for sharing your side of the story.
Mike
