I really have no idea what the right plan here is, but stepping up seems like the wrong idea. Noticing that we have 10 checkers in the zone, I think we should try to attack. This is certainly the DMP move, and I think extra wins should compensate the extra gammon losses. This move also utilizes all our "in the zone" checkers fairly efficiently.
