This is not really a pay-now-or-pay-later position. It many ways, it is more like pay-now-AND-pay-later. Nevertheless, I would pay.

Black is horribly out-timed. Even if he were willing to wreck his board, he has little hope of out-waiting hit opponent. Breaking the midpoint won’t solve his timing problems. It would give him some breathing space, but in the end, it looks like Black would still be forced off his anchor after trashing his board. Therefore, he should make a break for it now, while his board is still intact, and White’s position is weak. The blot in White’s board makes the choice easier.

Barring doublets, running both rear checkers eliminates the possibility that White could simultaneously hit and make an inside point. It also increases return shots in case Black is hit only once. In order to hit, White will be forced to break one of his outside points.
