i'd like to see them do it live, with no PA, no soundtrack, and no retakes...it sounds to me like there was some digital distortion put in there.

It is an amazing video, but they also include some tricks of the ear. There is an ear grabbing sequence beginning at about 1:05 and continuing to about 1:30, which sounds spectacular...however the sequence is made simpler by the fact that there are two instruments sharing different parts of melody and harmony. Each cello is switching from melody to harmony at different points to simplify fingering and string crossings. It's a great arrangement, and well executed.

It reminds me of a pair of quite challenging fiddle tunes, Devil's Dream, and Mason's Apron. Interestingly, it is easier for one fiddle to play both tunes simultaneously than it is to play either tune individually! That secret is always kept from the audience.
