Two down looks much stronger here than in 31P-22E-41E-54. Obviously, a big part of that is that Blue does not volunteer a direct shot when he puts a blot on the 9pt. Two other factors are the race—White is 6 pips better off here—and the need to contain White’s last runner. It is often correct to drop a blot somewhere above the 8pt in response to an opponent who has just escaped one of his (two) rear checkers.

Against that, it is worth noting that running should be a tad safer here for Blue. Unlike 31P-22E-41E-54, White has spares on only two points that would target the checker he leaves behind. In addition, Igor’s observation that White only has 8 checkers in the zone is just as relevant here as it was in his previous position.

On balance, I prefer playing two down, but I don’t think running is big error.

D (Down) = 13/9, 13/8
