I still don't understand the idea some seem to hold that we must decide between 8/7 and 7/6 for the ace. (I know some of you aren't currently taking that view, though.)

I even wondered about wasting a single pip with 14/11, 6/5. (Oh, my! "blasphemy"...) Then we have a good 5 or 6 next time that potentially keeps the anchor and doesn't go deep. However, that occasionally leaves awkward 4x rolls when we don't hit and duplicates 4's when we do hit. And if we're coming out (which could be right -- I don't know) then it's definitely a waste.

This position looks to be near the extremum for getting off the gammon. (I think UBK has been arguing this for a couple rolls.) It also looks to me as though Dillies' last roll was good for them -- clearing the deepest point and coming down to a position that can't leave a double direct. Even though we hit 9% of the time next turn the tide may have turned for leaning more towards saving the G than optimizing our position for a hit. (Maybe our small roll is on the flipside of that argument, though.)

Accepting that (as Mike hints) any ace that neither covers nor scores a run has no chance of winning, I'll stick with my original but go with 14/11, 7/6 as my backup.

1st choice: 14/10. 2nd choice: 14/11, 7/6.

P.S. I'm sure those of you who participate in the GammonU OLM have noticed the parallel issues there and here.
