I played it out a number of times, and so far when I got the chance to make the 5 I did. And also I hit loose on the 5 in a number of scenarios, and slotted it in other scenarios.

My play suggestions is a combination on wanting to be at the edge of the prime to be able to take advantage of a prime cracking, and taking away the spare pips on the outside. If you make the 5 and whether you hit or not, it may look like you accomplished a lot, but timing considerations are taking away from that, and if you win the timing battle, and white cracks, you are still not in the position to capitalize on that. Maybe the key of what I am saying is that 23/22 needs to be part of the play, and that is something you cannot do if you play 7/5(2).

Finally, if you play 7/5(2) you will dupe your aces and deuces, because at least in some variations you'd want to hit the third checker instead of allowing it to play free pips.
