I also did such tests several decades ago when I was a novice, got lopsided distributions, and bought precision dice as soon as I could get hold of them. Problem solved!

I recall that the most distorted results were simply when one side was visibly longer than the others! These dice were not from cheap boards. Perhaps you should measure the sides before considering the effect of any 'cratering'?
