I like it Phil - as far as I am concerned, its a welcome idea. Have at it, give it a try, see how it goes.

I think though that in order to maximize a spread, you will get lots of people betting several players - i.e. the top 6 or 8 in a field. So you may need to be flexible about the size of the bet too - max it at 25 per unit, but allow for 10/15/20 as well - thats just my two cents (or five dollars).

Also, instead of keeping it quiet, you should probably have a laptop and a projector set up, showing current 'odds' as calculated by running bets, so you aren't announcing numbers or bets, but you have them on display for anyone to see. You should also have predetermined odds for the top 10 players just to make sure that people understand who the top players are. Of course, all bets are finalized on the spread of bets at start of play, so its not like anyone betting on NK while he is 9/5 favorite is getting 9/5, they are getting whatever the final split is.

One thing though - this may well step on calcutta's - so any tournament running a calcutta would probably not be thrilled to see this.
