It is surprising how often these 'hit in spite of shots to lose the game' plays are correct. Here it is perhaps a little clearer than in some cases since the race is tied.

Clearly the answer to your question is that if you survive the next roll the game is in much better shape for the win (and the gammon, of course): you gain a lot in the race and start to clear your toughest point. This is the kind of position that calls for the kind of courage that I so often lack. :)
