Indicating, I think, that 3/1 3/off gains more when not hit than it loses from getting hit more often, but you're hit less often in the modified position because, with a third checker off already, you can afford to play a little more safely.

Per Gnubg 2-ply rollout, and assuming the hit stats the bot reports are accurate.
