The Tipping Point

In Response To: A conundrum bearoff position (Bob Koca)

Another relevant position here is the original but with white having a total of 8 chekers off. After either play blue is a dog, and there 6/4 6/3 is correct.

I think this is the issue. When Blue needs White to dance for more than one turn, he should make the play that allows him to hold his board the longest. Taking a checker off this turn, and then breaking another point next turn, fares worse than quietly clearing the rear point. When you break the 6pt, and you next roll a non-doublet that does not have a 5 or 6, you will have borne off one or two checkers in two rolls and kept a five-point board. When you roll a non-doublet after clearing the 3pt, you will have taken off the same one or two checkers, but there will only be four points remaining in your board.

When White has fewer checkers off, Blue does not need White to dance as much. Instead, he needs to guard against a joker 66. That’s when holding the back point pays off.

The trick is to find the tipping point between these two competing motivations. The OP seems to do exactly that.
