In Response To: A conundrum bearoff position (Phil Simborg)

One of the fundamentals of post-ace point positions is to avoid stacks of four or more. You usually want to hold as many points as possible as long as possible. Stacks of four impede your ability to play with spares while retaining points. As your advantage gets greater, this is less important and considerations of safety eventually dominate. This positions illustrates that the fundamental still holds even with a fairly large advantage. Move the spare to the deuce or four point and you will see that clearing the three improves vs the alternative. This demonstrates that it isn't a matter of parity (odd vs even). It is about the stack of four.
