Herb is a great guy. He was criticized for following the rules of the tournament. The people who feel shame are those who called for shame, not Herb.

It wasn't too many years ago that someone, I believe it was Neil, corrected an illegal play in an important match to his detriment. He was criticized for damaging the equity of his Calcutta buyers. It is easy to draw criticism no matter what you do. For reasons that escape me, people love to tell others how to live their life rather than taking charge of their own.
