Based on a study of pre-1995 matches, the stand-out top players were:

Kiumars Motakhasses - I think the best player before Paul Magriel - revolutionised the game but was overtaken by his protoges, Roger Low and Jason Lester who developed superior cube knowledge and were joined by Mike Senkiewicz, dominating the top rank of play throughout the 80s but were then joined by Wilcox Snelling and Howard Ring.

In the early bot age from 1995, the stand out top player was Grandell who played 2.7 in Monte Carlo in 1997. When Grandell withdrew from the game, Tardieu was probably the best player. Nack Ballard and other Americans, Scandinavians and Germans were very close however.

The general picture is pre-1995, USA were the major dominant nation in backgammon. But after 1995, dominance was shared between a number of powerful nations which included Japan by the late 2000s.

Assuming the HOF covers the whole World stage, I would hope that the results manage to reflect the change in the centre of gravity caused by the introduction of the bots.
