I thought that was the ideal plan as well until I played it out. In practice white just comes straight in way before you get your guys beyond his prime and by hitting you have completely destroyed your own timing. This plan only works if you are able to roll a lot of 6s and in my games I just wasn't even close to getting enough 6s for this to work.

You don't buy very much time from hitting because white just comes straight in. If blue had had 1 more point in his board or 1 more outside blocking point, then it would be more realistic to go forward.
