Now that I'm thinking about it, I've never liked when coaches do what is referred to as "extending the game".

Say you're down 15 points and you score with 6:30 left in the game. You know you need to convert a 2 point conversion to tie the game. Every coach will kick the extra point first, putting them down 8 points. Then they kick the ball away. Say they get it back with a little over 3 minutes remaining. They drive down the field, score a TD with 10 seconds left, and fail to convert the 2 point conversion. Now the game is over...they lost.

Wouldn't you rather go for the 2 point conversion on the first TD? That way if you convert it, you're down 7 points, Great! But, if you fail to convert it, you now know that you need 2 scores with 6:30 remaining. I'd rather know that I need 2 scores now, than finding out with only 10 seconds left in the game. You could kick an on side kick, or when you get the ball back, you could drive down the field with a greater sense of urgency.

You will never see a coach do this though, at least I never have. After they score the first TD they always think it's correct to get to 1 score down, rather than risk still being down 2 scores. Even though in order to win the game you're still going to have to take that risk...but at a much more unforgiving time in the game.
