Holding game cubes

I think those who didn't study holding games don't appreciate how important distribution of spares of the leader is. I saw this idea in one of Stick's GammonVillage articles and it definitely straightened my approach to holding games.
If we are talking about standard 18pt and 20pt holding games, then for those who don't know reference positions a good rule of thumb is this: with plenty of spares the leader has an initial double if the race lead corresponds to the point of last take if this were a pure race. There are some +-1 pip exceptions to this rule, but they won't introduce any significant errors.
With 21pt holding games I found that the leader should double a tad later as far as race lead concerned. I haven't yet figured out why.
