Dual-Duel

I've argued the same thing before, and I still think that VRR is better than PR for tournaments. However, it's worth pointing out two arguments in the opposite direction that emerged from that discussion.

1. For the purposes of determining who is the "more skilful" player, PR is probably a more reliable indicator than VRR, given the same amount of data. The reason is that PR will pick up and magnify errors in the early games of a match.

2. Playing to win the VRR result doesn't always mean that you'll make the play that is best to win the match. For example, there could be situations in which you know the computer will do something weird in its VRR calculation and so you'll adjust your play accordingly.

Either way, playing a skill-based match is going to be psychologically different from playing a normal match. As Bob Wachtel noted, a late hit from the bar may be lucky as far as winning the game goes, but may give you a long string of difficult containment decisions and therefore be "unlucky" as far as measuring your skill goes.
