I think the question is how precious is time? If it would be chess I would say it is a major error to waste so much time when so many games are to come. But due to chess has a lot more tactical possibilities (or is less strategical, what you prefer :)) ) it is less risk in BG. When you are in auto pilot mode because your clock is low you risk IMHO much less than in chess.

Still I think it would be better to invest the time more evenly.

Final thought: if it would be a much later game an not the first one the influence of the final score would be greater so it would be more economical to invest the time.
