Unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world and I think sometimes we have to bow to practicality. For the BMAB, in particular, I actually think that PR works better in practice because then you don't have to track the Elo ratings of the entire playing population.

Regarding reliability suppose A is a better player than B and they play 50 seven point matches. Which is more likely, A having a lower PR or A having a higher total of VRR? I am not sure. My guess is that they are close but many seem to think PR does better. I don't have a good argument why and I don't think anyone has given a good explanation one way or the other.

Yes, this is a good point and is more reliably addressed by looking at data than by theorizing. One could collect some data via bot-vs-bot experiments, and seeing in what percentage of matches the stronger side has the higher VRR/PR.
