It's huge--One Solution

I have always believed that a major final, and even the semi-finals, should be refereed. Not that the referee will take away from the game or take away the player's responsibility to be fair and good sports, but because it will improve the game.

The referee can make sure the clock is right, and that plays are legal (along with the players) and the score is right. If the match is streamed, the referee can keep one eye on the monitor and be alerted if there is a problem in these areas and correct it.

The referee can determine if the dice are cocked and if it is a legal roll (e.g. that both dice left the cup together etc.) so that the players don't have to call these things on each other.

The referee can caution or even penalize players who take too long a break; or act in an unsportsmanlike fashion (which is rarely seen in the finals, but you all remember how Magriel moved the checkers against Presser....if I was the referee that would not have happened more than once or twice).

If you don't want to call him a referee, call him a monitor, and give him the above responsibilities. He is there to help both players, and the audience, assure that there is fair play and no intentional or unintentional mistakes that tilt the playing field.

Why, he could even keep score. Why not?
