So if your opponent is holding a 2 cube, you may force him to turn it to 4, but your opponent still retains ownership of the cube. He does not have an option to drop this extra turn of the cube. You may agree before the game to only allow this to happen once per game.
I've played a variation on this variation. A third die is rolled. Any time a triple is rolled (111, 222, etc.) then the cube doubles no matter where it is. If non-triple, then the third die is ignored. Of course, all 3 dice must be different colors to keep track of which is the third one.
What I found surprising about it is how much it changes strategy in a variety of ways.
No limit on turns, and of course a general triplet comes up 6x more frequently than your scenario.
