Typically, I think, the dice dictate what you have to do and you just have to follow orders.

No argmument here. I enjoyed reading MCG’s remarks. In another place, he says you have to take what the dice give you, which is essentially identical to your view.

As far as steering the game a certain direction goes, the plays that are tied under Ballard/Weaver are the ones where there should be the least amount of debate about choosing the 2nd-best play. Ties under B/W occur when the equity difference is less than 0.01, so even that may be a little generous. In an unlimited game, I usually drop this to around 0.007. Good players may choose to sacrifice larger amounts of equity based on circumstance or opponent.

My own game is relatively mediocre. Depending where you put me, I play in the bottom half of the Open division or the top half of the Advanced division. From that perspective, I feel I have fewer opportunities for steering the game. I try to stay focused on finding the best play in each position. For me, that usually means finding the play that wins a strong XG rollout. Since I have trouble finding the best play, how could I say with any confidence what is 2nd-best, and gauge accurately how much equity is lost when choosing that play?

That does not mean I am barred from jumping at swing plays when facing a top player. Some of those I can recognize easily, and it is easy for me to take advantage. For the most part, however, I feel that choosing inferior plays in order to “steer the game” a certain direction is a luxury available only to very strong players. I get to do it when two plays are close. A strong player may get to do it even when sacrificing some equity.
