questions to Jake

Jake: "Joe has been playing great backgammon as long as I've known him, which by now is over thirty years. Other than that time we played doubles during the Plimpton in 1983 and he didn't want to make the opponent's barpoint I have hardly known him to err."
Interesting comment which kind of makes me wonder how did you know back in the day (before the bots) what was correct and what was wrong? How did you know whose opinion to trust?
Was it all based on who had done hand rollouts? How did you know whose hand rollouts to trust?
Or did you just go with whoever was winning more at the time?
When you write you haven't seen Joe err more than once since 1983, then that implies that you must have been better than Joe in order to be able to evaluate his play. How did you know that was the case?
I am guessing a lot of things must have been more interesting back in the day and the discussions about this or that play must have been so much more entertaining. Today those discussions kind of die when someone brings the rollout. When that happens everybody is able to see why a play is correct and another play wrong.
Were the ability to provide a convincing argument for a play during these discussions also a factor when determining who was a better player?
I am hoping for a fun, entertaining and well written story/anecdote from the good old days which I think you are a master of writing. Your stuff is always worth a good read, imo.
disclaimer: none of the above is intended to take away anything from neither Joe, nor Jake. I come in peace and hope I will not be excommunicated from the BG community by people like Jason Lee who knows a lot better than me when it is appropriate to be skeptical, who is above reproach, when one is hiding behind cliches, etc. So forgive me if I am a slow learner.:-)
