It seems to me that last chance is an artifact of the pre-side-event era. Tournaments were less busy, less cluttered then.

It gave people who had bombed out of the main and the conso -- and perhaps lost all their remaining money in side games -- a little bit of hope, a last little bite of the apple that they had already paid for. It had its whimsical charm, and there was the added naughty thrill (like going to traffic court hoping the ticketing officer would not show) that your first opponent would sleep in or not care enough about the last dregs of equity to play.

I don't remember there being these sorts of scheduling issues back in the day though ....
