I'm still fine with progressive LC.

In Response To: Annual Abolish the last chance post (please, think of the children) (Matt Cohn-Geier)

As I wrote a year ago. "For more than the past 5 years I've been very strongly urging ABT directors to make all LC's progressive.

A couple have changed, one after polling their players, while others remain stubborn and fail to realize that some of these quickly eliminated players can and will enter side events if they were made available.

I'll point out that several+ of the ABT events are DE with a conso. For those that have lost twice, DE with a conso is EXACTLY the same as a Main/Conso/Progressive LC since you're playing the match that will eliminate you from the event with your 3rd loss, immediately following your second loss."

I still agree with this, even after losing my money round LC match to KG at 8:28 PM and noting that had the LC not paid the final two players, KG would've had to play another 5 pt match. I did manage to get back in time to my room, to see the winning interception.

There are a few issues with San Antonio that made it more jammed up than a typical ABT weekend. 1) More players, which means an extra round must be played. 2) Far too many side events. A couple of those side events need to go away for next year and the some events should start on Weds. as well for an extra day. 3) Some road blocks were created by player's still alive in the main (main, not conso) being entered into the starting brackets of things like the 1 pt USBGF Free Roll. A couple weren't available for a day to play due to being tied up in the main. Players need to police and manage themselves a little better and staff running these side events can do a better job to minimize conflicts.

A typical weekend that runs a 32-64 player bracket and a progressive LC and fewer side events has less issues and I find that a progressive LC is just fine.

That being said, MCG is not far off the mark when he says to abolish the LC or that some T's should do so. Much of the late night early morning suffering I have encountered at T's over the decades has been caused by the need to get in an extra round or two of conso so that the LC isn't delayed on Sunday. Once again, all redrawn LC's on Sunday need to go away.

Here's a common situation that one would think easy for directors to reason out but was mangled by one a few years ago. We had a nice full bracket of 32 at this smallish event. Places to be paid are 1st and 2nd Main and Conso and 1st LC. So this means that there were to be 28 in the LC. Late Sat. these 28 were to be made up of 26 who'd already lost in the Conso and the 2 losers from the Conso Semis. But as it was already midnight, I suggested to the director to have the Conso Semis played in the morning and then give the two losers 1 bye into the LC. Even though I then drew out the bracket for him, he still didn't get it and insisted upon a full redraw LC Sunday morning. Most players aren't too happy to start a 9 pt match at 12:30 am, finish it at 2 am and have to play again at 10 am.

I know that when Pittsburgh tried a Swiss format jammed into two days and that those with two losses were out instantly, I wasn't very happy with the format and wanted another match to play after two losses.

Oh and a God that kills kittens for vengeful reasons related to BG would be no God of mine.

Maybe MCG is correct that it is time for LC's to go away. But not for the kittens but for the players.
