Since I forfeited 3 events in order to keep the tournament moving more smoothly, I couldn't agree with you more. This is the second year in a row I missed all or most of the Superbowl, and being able to watch that game with friends is part of the fun of coming to this tournament in the first place.
Your recommendation to get rid of last chance is brilliant, and clearly is ONE OF THE THINGS that would help this, and any tournament that offers other events simultaneous to the main event. Note that if this is done, a few more ABT points as well as prize money should go to winners in the main and consolation.
And who wouldn't like more fun and different options on Sunday if they are out of the tournament? 1 pointers; blitzes; jackpots; and how about a gin tournament, poker game, scrabble challenge, hearts game....something completely different for those of us who like other games and would love to see how we do against our fellow backgammon players? How about backgammon-to-lose or nackgammon or randomgammon? If you're out of the main event, and you've been playing regular backgammon for the past two or three days, something different and fun would be great. I had more fun playing skunk dice for a couple of hours at one tournament then the entire rest of the weekend!
Or how about just being free to watch the finals of the main and the masters and the dual-duel? Instead of being forced to play last chance or try to finish up 5 other events. Wouldn't it be great if 40 or 50 people got to watch the finals instead of just a handful (because they were busy playing or because it started at 10PM on Sunday night!)
