Matt says: Here is another thought: if playing less than 3 matches is really the thing that gets people, make the LC only for people who go 0-2, and start it immediately after the Cons 1st round. If you have one or more wins in the main or Conso you are ineligible for the LC....
One problem with that is distribution of ABT points. I don't like at all having a person who goes 0-2 having an equity advantage over someone who goes 1-2.
The best ideas I've seen so far in this thread, in no particular order, are a-going with a Swiss format, where everyone gets to play more matches, which is what they came to a tournament to do; b-having larger events run an extra day; c-having some of the side events bar players who are still alive in the Main or Conso. That last one is good idea whether or not there is a LC.
And oh yeah...those directors who still have a Calcutta might want to consider scrapping it in favor of longer matches, or another side event (again, only for people out of the Main and Conso) to make up for the lost income. Even a registration fee that made up for the income would be OK, since it wouldn't have to be very large at all to make up for 10% of the shrinking amounts of money people are willing to plop down on pools full of players they don't know.
A Calcutta never wastes just the time it is allotted. I have been to many events, and I believe that I have yet to see a Calcutta finish on time, and not coincidentally I'm sure, I've also never seen those events start on time--rarely even close to it. You don't need unclocked Turtle vs. Snail matches to wreck the schedule, if you have already delayed every first-round match in both divisions by half an hour!
