I agree with all your points. Since you (and I) love chouettes so much, I know that many others love that form of competition also, but most don't enjoy the financial risks of chouettes, particularly at tournament where you sit down across from Giants. So one solution there is to have a chouette tournament as a side event. This has been done in the past, most successfully, in Atlanta and elsewhere and I have played in this event and it is VERY EXCITING and is similar in many ways to playing tournament poker where you have to weigh the risks and rewards of how many chips you have left vs. your opponents. Great game.
Also, the Turks have invented an incredible format with the FTBG system so that it plays similar to a Swiss, but everyone knows exactly when they play, who they play, and at what table. Even people on line watching streamed matches can watch the match they want that is being streamed at the time they want. There are no delays and everything runs smoothly, and you have to lose 3 times before you are out of the running to win, so better players are incentivized to come. (You might be surprised how often the finals do not contain the top players if there is a large field, but at least nobody walks away feeling they lost out because of one bad-luck match.)
The Turks have shared their idea and software with the world. Why don't some of our US TD's learn from those who have built a better mousetrap? Because "nobody likes change but a wet baby." Well, I think we are hearing a pretty loud cry for change from a lot of people who aren't babies (I know, I opened myself up for that one!)
This weekend the Turks will have a tournament with Mochy and Michy and other great players in attendance and there will be close to 500 entrants! They will not have any delays. Everyone will know exactly who and when and where to play. If they can do it with 500, why can't we do it with under 100 in any division?
We can. Let's do it.
