I'm very interested in TDs turning a profit, but I don't think shaming players into a hotel not of their choosing makes sense. Sometimes there are good reasons for choosing a different hotel. To the extent that choice encourages players to attend, that's good for the tournament.

I was at a tournament where the TD exhorted local players to stay in the hotel! That would lead to doubling the cost to many of those players. Surely there are other ways to turn a profit.

TD revenue is certainly one strong factor in choosing where to sleep, but it's not the only one.
