Crunch!

Behind by a bundle, racing is not a concern here. Blue must hit to win. Crossing over with the ace, 7/6, may be part of the play, but not because it preserves racing equity.

Eschewing fancy plays that volunteer is probably a big mistake in a position that has so much QF. Nevertheless, I am sure I would not volunteer OTB, so I won’t here. Besides, it is probably wrong!

White will have trouble playing many/most 5s and 6s, and also a couple of 4s. There may be shots upcoming. Blue’s top priority after hitting, will be to cover his inside blot. Unfortunately, making the bar point will take away a builder for the inside point. Another disadvantage to making the bar point is that it leaves Blue in an inflexible position in cases where White does not roll a 5 or 6, and can play safely in his home board.

Those considerations lead me to the following ranking:

  1. 13/8, 7/6 – 5 and 3 cover. 2 and 4 hit on the 9pt.
  2. 13/8, 4/3 – Switching gives two cover numbers for the inside point.
  3. 13/7 – Making the bar point could be useful if White enters on the ace point.
