Bill Finneran vs. Sam Ahmed

2015 Capital Classic, A Legal-moves Tournament
Open Division, Second Chance, Round 8
9-point match

In game 5 of his match with Sam Ahmed, Bill Finneran rolled 55, and made an illegal move. You can see his error at the 34-minute mark of the YouTube video. Instead of playing 10/5 with the last of his 5s, Bill moves 10/4.

As both his 5pt and 4pt were open, Bill probably would have been better off slotting the 5pt. To that extent then, the error favored opponent Sam Ahmed.

After Bill punches the clock, Sam leaves the dice on the table, and appears to be considering something. In isolation, the pause does not seem like much. When, however, you compare it to the brisk pace at which Sam plays on both the preceding and following turns, it is quite noticeable. Sam then says nothing, and rolls. Although cubing would have been a whopper, one interpretation is that Sam was deciding whether to double.
